іBienvenidos!
My name is Jenilee Toler and I will be teaching middle school and high school Spanish at Voyager this year! I grew up in Cary, North Carolina and lived there until I attended East Carolina University, where I earned a B.S in Hispanic Studies Education. While attending ECU I had the opportunity to study abroad in Spain. I lived in the city of Granada for a semester (see picture above), and was able to visit several other cities in Spain during this time. I have also had the opportunity to travel to a few other countries including Mexico, Honduras, Puerto Rico, and The Dominican Republic. I have five years of teaching experience, and this is my second year at Voyager Academy! I am excited about this year and I am looking forward to sharing my love of Spanish and seeing the world with my students!
Exploratory Spanish:
This is a non-sequential program, which does not lead to the development of communicative proficiency. This is a preparatory class for HS Spanish I. The emphasis of this program is on:
- Communication through learned words and phrases dealing with familiar topics (alphabet, greetings and goodbyes, numbers, colors, days, months, etc.)
- Pre-reading/writing activities through oral language
- Connections to the grade level curriculum.
- Awareness of other cultures.
- Comparison of culture and language to the students' own culture and language.
- Awareness of the importance of learning another language and culture.
Spanish 1 / 1A / 1B:
This course is an introduction to the study of the target language and its culture. Students perform the most basic functions of the language and become familiar with some elements of its culture. The emphasis is placed on the development of the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing within a given context extending outside of the classroom setting when possible. The context focuses on the students' lives and experiences and includes an exposure to everyday customs and lifestyles. Grammar is integrated throughout the course and is selected according to the language conventions (functions). A general introduction to the culture, its products (e.g., literature, laws, foods, games,) perspectives (e.g., attitudes, values, beliefs,) and practices (patterns of social interaction) is integrated throughout the course. Students acquire some insight into how languages and cultures work by comparing the target language and culture(s) to their own. Integration of other disciplines is on-going throughout the course.
Middle school parents/ students: This course truly mirrors a rigorous high school class and should not be considered a “special”, but more of a challenging core class. The completion of Spanish 1A / 1B will lead the students into High School Spanish II. Students need to earn an A or B in the course to be recommend to go into Spanish II once they reach high school. Spanish II is a sophomore / junior level class. I will not recommend middle school students to go into Spanish II without feeling like they match the maturity and motivation of a high school junior regardless of the grade obtained in the course. I will advise students not to continue to Spanish 1B if I do not feel that they are on track to be successful in Spanish II once they reach high school. Students will receive middle school elective credit as long as they pass the course. Please contact me regularly if you would like to know if your child in on track to proceed to the next level.
